Blue Heron Data is an independent software studio building practical, focused tools for niche communities that mainstream software tends to overlook.
How It Started
My first computer was an Apple IIc. I fell in love with what software could do early on, particularly the ability to organize, manage, and make sense of information. A career in the working world meant years on Windows machines, but retirement brought me back to where I started. The Apple ecosystem. Coming home, so to speak.
What I found was a gap. Amateur radio, a hobby I love, is largely a Windows world. The Mac, iPhone, and iPad tools that operators actually need either do not exist or do not exist well. Blue Heron Data started as my attempt to fill some of those voids. Native Apple applications built for ham radio operators and anyone else who cares about having good tools for managing their data.
Why No Subscriptions
I share the frustration that a lot of people feel watching software they used to own become something they rent. Blue Heron Data apps are one-time purchases. You buy it, you own it. That is a commitment, not just a pricing strategy.
Why Blue Heron Data
The name comes from a photograph. Years ago, while visiting my parents out of state, I spent some time photographing Blue Herons. My father had the film developed, framed one of the prints, and shipped it to me. He passed away not long after. That framed photo sits with me still. It seemed like the right name for something I am building with the same kind of care.
What We Build
We make web tools and native Apple applications for communities with real, specific needs. Amateur radio operators, homeowners, and anyone who wants software that respects their time, their privacy, and their wallet.
